Fyodor Dostoevsky
Eugénie Grandet (translation of Balzac)
Written work
Eugénie Grandet (translation of Balzac)
Евгения Гранде (перевод романа О. де Бальзака)

A free and somewhat abridged version of Balzac's novel about the miser of Saumur and his daughter, made by a twenty-two-year-old Dostoevsky who had just left the engineering service. Balzac was then his great model, and the translation, published in a theatrical journal, was his first contact with print.

Authorship note
Russian translation of Honoré de Balzac's novel; the only translation Dostoevsky completed and his first printed text. He abandoned others of Eugène Sue and George Sand.
