Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Peasant Marey
Written work
The Peasant Marey
Мужик Марей

An autobiographical memory from A Writer's Diary (February 1876): in the Omsk prison, amid the drunken Easter holiday, the author recalls how at the age of nine a serf on the family estate calmed him and blessed him when he was fleeing an imaginary wolf. That gesture makes him see the convicts differently. It is the page that best explains his faith in the Russian people.
