At Tikhon's (Stavrogin's Confession)
У Тихона (Исповедь Ставрогина)

Stavrogin visits the retired bishop Tikhon and hands him a printed confession: he tells how he abused a twelve-year-old girl, Matryosha, and let her hang herself without intervening. Tikhon senses that the confession is another form of pride. For many critics it is the missing key to Demons and one of the most terrible pages in literature.

Authorship note
A chapter of Demons written in 1871–1872 and rejected by Mikhail Katkov, editor of The Russian Messenger, because of the confession of the abuse of a girl; Dostoevsky did not restore it. It was published in 1922 from the proofs and a copy made by Anna Grigoryevna.
