byFyodor Dostoevsky

Delivered on 8 June 1880 in Moscow before the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature, at the unveiling of the Pushkin monument. It presents the poet as the prophet of the Russian soul's 'universal responsiveness' and calls for humility ('Humble yourself, proud man!') and for the reconciliation of Westernisers and Slavophiles. It was met with a historic ovation and published in the single issue of A Writer's Diary for August 1880.
