The Landlady

A novella of romantic, almost folkloric atmosphere: the young dreamer Ordynov rents a room from a mysterious old man, Murin, half merchant and half sorcerer, and from the beautiful Katerina, who lives in his thrall. Ordynov falls in love, falls ill and cannot free her from that power. Belinsky judged it a failure; today it reads as an early sketch of the themes of domination and the dreamer.
