The Crocodile
Крокодил. Необыкновенное событие, или Пассаж в Пассаже

'An Extraordinary Event': the civil servant Ivan Matveich is swallowed alive by a crocodile on display in the Passage arcade in St Petersburg, and from inside the animal, where he is quite comfortable, he begins to hold forth on economics and progress. A satire of liberals and of faith in economic science, it was read as a jibe at Chernyshevsky.
