The Siberian Notebook
Сибирская тетрадь («Моя тетрадка каторжная»)

A notebook of 486 numbered entries in which Dostoevsky jotted down in prison the phrases, proverbs, songs and expressions of the convicts: a folkloric repertoire of prison speech that he later used in The House of the Dead and other works. It is regarded as his first systematic contact with the speech of the common people.
