Canticle of the Creatures (Canticle of Brother Sun)
Laudes creaturarum (Cantico di frate Sole)
Thirty-odd lines of rhymed prose praising the Most High 'with all his creatures': Brother Sun, Sister Moon and the stars, Brother Wind, Sister Water, Brother Fire and Sister Mother Earth; then those who forgive for his love and 'Sister bodily Death'. The preposition 'per' admits instrumental, causal or agentive readings, and critics still debate it. It is one of the first poems of Italian literature and the most read Franciscan text.

Authorship note
Authentic. Composed in the Umbrian vernacular at San Damiano in 1225; the stanza on forgiveness was added to reconcile the bishop and the podestà of Assisi, and that on death in 1226. The oldest witness, with space left for music that was never copied, is codex 338 of the Library of the Sacro Convento, Assisi.
