True and Perfect Joy
De vera et perfecta laetitia
Francis rules out as perfect joy that all the masters of Paris or kings should join the order, or that he should work miracles, and places it in arriving home at night, frozen, and being turned away by the porter without losing patience. It is his most radical teaching on dispossession.

Authorship note
A dictation by Francis to Brother Leo transmitted in Latin by fourteenth-century manuscripts; Esser includes it among the dictated writings. Chapter 8 of the Little Flowers is a later narrative reworking.
