Testamentum
A memoir of his own conversion (the lepers, the churches, the first brothers, the revelation to live according to the Gospel, the greeting 'The Lord give you peace') and a final exhortation to keep the Rule 'simply and without gloss', forbidding requests for privileges from the curia. It is Francis's most personal text and the main autobiographical source on his life.
Authorship note
Authentic writing according to Kajetan Esser's critical edition (1976). Dictated shortly before his death in 1226; in 1230 Gregory IX declared (bull Quo elongati) that it did not legally bind the brothers.
