Regula non bullata

Fresco de «Frater Franciscus» en el Sacro Speco de Subiaco
byFrancis of Assisi

Twenty-four chapters combining norms and long exhortations: manual work, the ban on touching money, care of lepers, mission 'among the Saracens and other non-believers', and a lengthy closing prayer of thanksgiving. It reflects the itinerant fraternity of the early years before its transformation into an order.

Authorship note

Authentic writing according to Kajetan Esser's critical edition (1976). Drafted from the proto-rule orally approved in 1209/1210 and expanded at the chapters; Caesar of Speyer helped with the biblical citations. It never received a bull.
