Life of Pythagoras (Diogenes Laertius, Lives VIII 1–50)
Βίοι καὶ γνῶμαι, VIII 1–50

It contains the genealogy, the journeys, the list of incarnations Pythagoras remembered (Aethalides, Euphorbus, Hermotimus, Pyrrhus), Xenophanes' lines about the dog, the summary of doctrines from Alexander Polyhistor's "Pythagorean Notes", the food prohibitions, the versions of the death, Hermippus' story of his descent to Hades and the apocryphal letter from Pythagoras to Anaximenes.

Authorship note
A chapter of the work of Diogenes Laertius (3rd century CE), a compiler who piles up versions without choosing among them. Useful precisely for that reason: it preserves the contradictory reports on Pythagoras' origin, writings and death, and quotations from lost authors (Hermippus, Timaeus, Aristoxenus, Alexander Polyhistor).
