Fragments of Philolaus of Croton

Busto de Pitágoras (Museos Capitolinos)
byPythagoras

The authentic fragments maintain that the cosmos is composed of unlimited and limiting things fitted together by a harmony, that everything known has number, and describe the musical scale in numerical ratios and a cosmos with a central fire around which the Earth revolves. It is the oldest testimony to Pythagorean science.

Authorship note

A work by Philolaus (c. 470–385 BCE), a Pythagorean of the later fifth century BCE, not by Pythagoras. It is the first Pythagorean book on record and the main source of what Aristotle calls the doctrine of the Pythagoreans; some of the surviving fragments are spurious.
