Life of Pythagoras (Porphyry)
Πυθαγόρου βίος

It covers the origin, education, arrival in Italy, the marvels (the Daunian she-bear, the fish, the greeting of the river Caucasus, the simultaneous presence in Metapontum and Tauromenium), the teaching through symbols, Pythagorean friendship and Cylon's conspiracy, naming its sources: Aristoxenus, Dicaearchus, Nicomachus, Neanthes, Antonius Diogenes. Its Greek text survives almost complete.

Authorship note
A work by the Neoplatonist Porphyry of Tyre (c. 234–305 CE), surviving as a fragment of his History of Philosophy. Shorter and more sober than Iamblichus', it transmits verbatim quotations from ancient authors, notably Dicaearchus' summary of Pythagoras' doctrine (§ 19), one of the most valuable reports in existence.
