Bonaventure, The Major Legend of Saint Francis
Legenda maior sancti Francisci

The official biography, organised as a spiritual itinerary towards configuration with Christ crucified, culminating in the stigmata. It served as the programme for the fresco cycle of the Upper Basilica at Assisi and fixed the saint's image for centuries.

Authorship note
A biographical source, not a work by Francis. Commissioned from Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, minister general, by the chapter of Narbonne (1260) and approved at Pisa in 1263; the chapter of Paris in 1266 ordered the earlier legends destroyed. It is accompanied by a Minor Legend for liturgical use.
