What Is to Be Withheld from the Unworthy

المضنون به على غير أهله (al-Madnun bihi 'ala ghayr ahlihi)

Al-Ghazali según Khalil Gibran
byAl-Ghazali

A short treatise on metaphysics and psychology (God, the angels, the soul, prophecy, the hereafter) with a markedly philosophical tone, presented as a teaching not to be divulged. If authentic, it would show that al-Ghazali kept more from the philosophers than the *Tahafut* reveals; if not, it witnesses how esoteric texts came to be attributed to him after his death.

Authorship note

Disputed attribution (Bouyges and Allard, pp. 51–56; Iranica); Ibn Taymiyya and others already rejected it; its doctrine, close to Avicenna's, has fuelled the debate about an "esoteric al-Ghazali".
