Autorretrato de Hakuin (1767)
byHakuin Ekaku

Songs for grinding grain—the best known sung by Otafuku, the plump girl—, lullabies, weeding songs, the “road chant” and riddles, into which Hakuin put the doctrine of kenshō, filial piety and social criticism in forms peasants could memorise. They are the popular counterpart of his treatises in Chinese.
