Francis of Assisi
Peace Prayer ('Lord, make me an instrument of your peace')
Traditional attribution
Peace Prayer ('Lord, make me an instrument of your peace')
Belle prière à faire pendant la messe («Seigneur, faites de moi un instrument de votre paix»)

The best-known prayer in the world under Francis's name: 'where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon…'. Its spirit is akin to the Franciscan one, but its vocabulary and construction are early twentieth century. It is listed here so that readers know where it comes from.

Authorship note
Spurious. Published anonymously in December 1912 in La Clochette, bulletin of the Ligue de la Sainte-Messe (Paris); sent to Benedict XV in 1915, translated in L'Osservatore Romano in 1916, printed around 1920 on the back of a holy card of Saint Francis and attributed to him from 1927. It appears in no manuscript or medieval source (Renoux, 2001).
