Thomas of Celano, The Life of Saint Francis (First Life)
Vita beati patris nostri Francisci (Vita prima)
The first official biography: youth, conversion, foundation, the sermon to the birds, Greccio, the stigmata and the death, with a book of miracles. Written in hagiographic rhetoric and at a time when Elias of Cortona dominated the order, it is the source closest to the events.

Authorship note
A biographical source, not a work by Francis. Commissioned by Gregory IX for the canonisation and finished around February 1229; Celano had joined the order around 1215 and knew Francis.
