Aristotle's testimonies on Socrates

Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

The most important are in the Metaphysics (A 6, 987b1–4, and M 4, 1078b17–32): Socrates dealt with ethical questions, sought the universal and was the first to fix attention on definitions; inductive arguments and universal definition are owed to him, but he did not separate universals from things. In the Nicomachean Ethics (VII 2) Aristotle discusses his thesis that no one does wrong knowingly, and in the Poetics (1447b) he mentions "Socratic discourses" as a literary genre.

Authorship note

Passages by Aristotle (384–322 BCE), who never knew Socrates but trained for twenty years in the Academy. Their value lies in his explicit distinction between what belongs to Socrates and what is Plato's.
