Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

Two fathers ask the generals Laches and Nicias whether their sons should learn to fight in armour; the conversation turns to what courage is. Laches, who fought beside Socrates at Delium, praises his conduct in the retreat. No definition survives scrutiny, and the dialogue ends in aporia, with the elders ready to go back to school.

Authorship note

A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him.
