Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

Just back from Potidaea, Socrates talks in the wrestling school with the young Charmides and his guardian Critias—both future members of the regime of the Thirty—about *sophrosyne*, temperance or soundness of mind. The definition as "knowing oneself" leads to the paradox of a knowledge of knowledge. It ends without agreement, with a bitter irony for readers who know the speakers' fate.

Authorship note

A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him.
