Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

Socrates asks the sophist Hippias what the beautiful is. Hippias' answers—a beautiful girl, gold, a prosperous life—and the later proposals—the fitting, the useful, what pleases sight and hearing—fall one after another. It ends with the proverb that "beautiful things are difficult".

Authorship note

Attributed to Plato; its authenticity has been debated since the nineteenth century. Even if it is not Plato's, it is an ancient witness to the image of Socrates in the Academy.
