The Discourse on Setting the Wheel of the Dhamma in Motion

Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta

Buda de pie, arte de Gandhara
bySiddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

It sets out the middle way between the pursuit of pleasure and self-mortification, the four noble truths—suffering, its origin in craving, its cessation and the eightfold path leading to it—and the "three turnings" in which the Buddha says he understood them. It ends with the understanding of Kondañña, the first disciple. It is the briefest and most complete doctrinal text of early Buddhism.

Authorship note

A discourse of the Samyutta Nikaya (SN 56.11) that tradition identifies with the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath. Parallels exist in the Vinaya of several schools and in Chinese; the differences in wording show that the text was standardised by the community.
