Sutta Nipata (The Group of Discourses)
Suttanipāta

A collection of seventy-two poems and verse dialogues in five chapters, from the Khuddaka Nikaya. It includes the Metta Sutta on boundless goodwill, the Rhinoceros Sutta ("let one wander alone like the rhinoceros"), the account of the sage Asita's visit to the newborn and the meeting with King Bimbisara. Its ideal is the wandering sage, without possessions or opinions to cling to: an image of Buddhism before monastic institutionalisation.

Authorship note
The Buddha wrote nothing. The discourses were transmitted orally for centuries by specialised reciters and committed to writing in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; authorship is collective and attribution to the Buddha traditional. Scholarship distinguishes early strata from later additions by comparing the Pali canon with its Chinese, Sanskrit and Tibetan parallels. The Sutta Nipata contains, by philological consensus, some of the oldest strata of the tradition, above all its chapters IV (Atthakavagga) and V (Parayanavagga), which the canon itself cites by name.
