byJesus of Nazareth

An Aramaic or Syriac version related to the Gospel of Matthew, used by Jewish Christians in Syria. The surviving fragments expand scenes from Matthew, such as that of the rich young man, and show how gospels circulated in the Semitic languages spoken by Jesus and his first followers.

Authorship note

A modern reconstruction from quotations in Jerome and marginal notes in medieval manuscripts of Matthew; it is thought to have been written in Aramaic or Syriac and related to Matthew. Its existence as a work distinct from the Gospel of the Hebrews is debated.
