The Secret Gospel of Mark — Jesus of Nazareth

Traditional attribution

The Secret Gospel of Mark

Τὰ μυστικὰ τοῦ Μάρκου (carta de Mar Saba)

Cristo Pantocrátor del Sinaí
byJesus of Nazareth

The letter quotes two passages from an expanded version of Mark intended for initiates, including the raising of a young man in Bethany who then spends a night with Jesus to be taught the mystery of the kingdom. It is recorded for its weight in scholarly debate, not as a secure ancient text.

Authorship note

Known only from a letter attributed to Clement of Alexandria that Morton Smith said he found copied into a book at the monastery of Mar Saba in 1958 and published in 1973. The manuscript, seen by very few scholars, is known mainly from photographs and its whereabouts are now unknown. Its authenticity is fiercely disputed and part of scholarship regards it as a modern forgery.
