The Q Source (Sayings Gospel Q)

Cristo Pantocrátor del Sinaí
byJesus of Nazareth

A collection of sayings without a passion or resurrection narrative: John the Baptist's preaching, the temptations, the beatitudes, love of enemies, the Lord's Prayer, the parables of the leaven and the lost sheep, the woes against the Pharisees and the announcements of judgement. Its discovery as a hypothesis in the nineteenth century, and the later find of the Gospel of Thomas—another sayings collection—changed the understanding of the origins of the gospel tradition.

Authorship note

A hypothetical document: no manuscript survives. It is reconstructed from some 230 verses common to Matthew and Luke that do not come from Mark. If it existed, it was a Greek collection of Jesus's sayings compiled c. 50–70, probably in Galilee or Syria. Some specialists (the Farrer-Goulder hypothesis) deny its existence and explain the common material by Luke's use of Matthew.
