Gorgias — Socrates

Recorded oral teaching

Gorgias

Γοργίας

Busto de Sócrates (Louvre)
bySocrates

Socrates argues with the rhetorician Gorgias, his pupil Polus and the politician Callicles about what rhetoric is and which life is best. Against Polus he maintains that it is better to suffer injustice than to commit it; against Callicles, who defends the right of the stronger and unbridled pleasure, that the ordered life is the happy one. It is Plato's most vehement dialogue and contains transparent allusions to Socrates' trial.

Authorship note

A work by Plato, not by Socrates. It is a literary recreation composed after his teacher's death: it preserves features of the historical Socrates, but his words are those Plato gives him.
