Vinaya Piṭaka

Buda de pie, arte de Gandhara
bySiddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

The code of monastic life: the Patimokkha rules for monks and nuns, each with the story of the offence that occasioned it, the community's procedures, and narratives including the beginning of the Buddha's career after awakening (Mahavagga I), the founding of the order of nuns and the first two councils (Cullavagga X–XII). It is as important for the history of Buddhism as the discourses.

Authorship note

The Buddha wrote nothing. The discourses were transmitted orally for centuries by specialised reciters and committed to writing in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; authorship is collective and attribution to the Buddha traditional. Scholarship distinguishes early strata from later additions by comparing the Pali canon with its Chinese, Sanskrit and Tibetan parallels. The rules are attributed to the Buddha case by case; historians see in the Vinaya a code that grew with the community after his death.
