Library Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

Majjhima Nikaya (The Middle Length Discourses)
Majjhima Nikāya

One hundred and fifty-two middle-length discourses, regarded by many specialists as the doctrinal heart of the canon. They contain the autobiographical accounts of the quest (Ariyapariyesana, Mahasaccaka), the parable of the raft (Alagaddupama), that of the poisoned arrow (Culamalunkya), the instruction on mindfulness of breathing (Anapanasati) and numerous dialogues with disciples, kings and opponents. Their variety shows the Buddha's method: adapting the teaching to the listener.

Authorship note
The Buddha wrote nothing. The discourses were transmitted orally for centuries by specialised reciters and committed to writing in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; authorship is collective and attribution to the Buddha traditional. Scholarship distinguishes early strata from later additions by comparing the Pali canon with its Chinese, Sanskrit and Tibetan parallels.
