Written work

The Mount of Perfection (drawing of Mount Carmel)

Monte de perfección (dibujo con leyendas)

Retrato de san Juan de la Cruz (atribuido a Zurbarán)
byJohn of the Cross

A graphic outline of the Ascent: two side paths seeking goods of heaven or earth that go astray, and a central path marked 'nothing, nothing, nothing… and even on the mount nothing' leading to the summit, where 'here there is no longer any path'. It is the visual synthesis of his teaching.

Authorship note

Authentic in design: John drew it for the Discalced nuns of Beas and distributed copies; the original is lost and survives in copies made by the nuns and in the engraving of the 1618 edition.
