Constitutions of the Society of Jesus

Constituciones de la Compañía de Jesús

Retrato de Ignacio de Loyola
byIgnatius of Loyola

Ten parts that follow a Jesuit's path: admission, dismissal, formation of novices, studies and colleges (Part IV, the basis of Jesuit pedagogy), final incorporation, the life of the professed, missions, union of those dispersed, the general's government and the preservation of the body. They combine legal norms with spiritual criteria: obedience 'like a dead body' that lets itself be carried, apostolic mobility, poverty, and the principle of adapting everything 'to persons, times and places'. Ignatius deliberately left them open to revision.

Authorship note

Drafted by Ignatius with the decisive collaboration of his secretary Juan Alfonso de Polanco between 1547 and 1556, building on earlier drafts. Jerónimo Nadal promulgated them experimentally from 1552; the First General Congregation approved them in 1558 and the Latin version was printed in Rome in 1558–1559. They include the General Examen and the Declarations.
