Asa di Var (Ballad in raga Asa)
ਆਸਾ ਦੀ ਵਾਰ

A var or heroic ballad in twenty-four stanzas by Nanak, interspersed with saloks by him and by Guru Angad, sung every dawn in gurdwaras. It criticises the religious hypocrisy of brahmins and qadis, the sacred thread, the notion of impurity and the arrogance of power; in one of its saloks it defends the dignity of woman, from whom kings are born. It is one of the central pieces of Sikh liturgy.
