The Four Books (Sishu)

四書

Retrato de Confucio por Kanō Sansetsu
byConfucius

The Neo-Confucian synthesis that for six centuries was the syllabus of the imperial examinations and therefore the basic education of the whole Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese elite. Its reading order—Daxue, Analects, Mencius, Zhongyong—encodes a pedagogy of self-cultivation running from the individual to the order of the world.

Authorship note

Scholastic canon fixed by Zhu Xi in 1190: Great Learning (Daxue), Analects, Mencius and Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong), with his commentaries. Only the Analects transmit Confucius's words; the other three are attributed to Zengzi, Mencius and Zisi.
