Authorship note
Chapter 42 of the Liji. Zhu Xi (12th century) divided it into a short “classic text” he attributed to Confucius, transmitted by his disciple Zengzi, and ten chapters of commentary by Zengzi's disciples. The attribution is traditional; philology dates it to the third or second century BCE.
