Retrato de Confucio por Kanō Sansetsu
byConfucius

Source of the Confucian ideal of government: Yao, Shun and Yu as models, the Mandate of Heaven as the ground of legitimacy, the prince as morally responsible for the people. Confucius cites it in the Analects (2.21, 14.40) as authority on filial duty and mourning.

Authorship note

Collection of speeches, proclamations and narratives attributed to the sage-kings and the early Zhou. Tradition makes Confucius its compiler and author of the prefaces; part of the chapters (the "old text") is a 4th-century CE forgery, demonstrated by Yan Ruoqu in the 17th century.
