Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu)

春秋

Retrato de Confucio por Kanō Sansetsu
byConfucius

Terse year-by-year annals of twelve dukes of Lu, in just over sixteen thousand characters. The Confucian tradition read into their laconism a system of "praise and blame" encoded in the choice of each word, and on that reading three canonical commentaries were built: the Zuozhuan, the Gongyang and the Guliang. It is the only one of the Five Classics whose composition tradition attributes directly to Confucius.

Authorship note

Official chronicle of the state of Lu (722–481 BCE). Mencius (3B9) states that Confucius composed it and that "rebellious ministers and wicked sons trembled"; modern scholarship considers it the work of Lu's chroniclers, with a possible editorial intervention by Confucius that cannot be verified.
