Adi Shankara
Kanakadhārā Stotra (Hymn of the Golden Shower)
Traditional attribution
Kanakadhārā Stotra (Hymn of the Golden Shower)
कनकधारास्तोत्रम्

A hymn to the goddess Lakṣmī in some twenty verses asking for her favourable glance upon the devotee. It is one of the stotras ascribed to Śaṅkara most widely recited in South India, and its origin legend —the shower of golden fruits on the poor woman’s house— belongs to the hagiographic repertoire.

Authorship note
Traditionally ascribed to Śaṅkara and included in the Vani Vilas edition of his complete works (a29); modern scholarship, since Hacker and Mayeda, accepts as authentic only the major commentaries and the Upadeśasāhasrī, so this work is recorded as attributed. The hagiographies link it to an episode of Śaṅkara’s childhood, when he is said to have sung it for a poor woman who gave him her only fruit as alms. Spanish title descriptive.
