Daśaślokī (Ten Verses)

दशश्लोकी

Śaṅkara con sus discípulos, de Raja Ravi Varma
byAdi Shankara

Ten verses that deny one after another every identification —elements, senses, castes, stages of life, practices— and close with the refrain “I am Śiva, the one that remains”. Brief and easy to memorise, it is one of the most quoted summaries of the Advaita way of negation.

Authorship note

Traditionally ascribed to Śaṅkara and included in the Vani Vilas edition of his complete works (a29); modern scholarship, since Hacker and Mayeda, accepts as authentic only the major commentaries and the Upadeśasāhasrī, so this work is recorded as attributed. Madhusūdana Sarasvatī (16th century) commented on it as Śaṅkara’s in his Siddhāntabindu. Spanish title descriptive.
