Buda de pie, arte de Gandhara
bySiddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

Eighty short prose narratives, each culminating in a verse exclamation by the Buddha. It contains some of the most quoted passages on nirvana ("There is, monks, an unborn, an unbecome…", Ud 8.3), the instruction to Bahiya ("in the seen, only the seen", Ud 1.10) and the parable of the blind men and the elephant (Ud 6.4).

Authorship note

The Buddha wrote nothing. The discourses were transmitted orally for centuries by specialised reciters and committed to writing in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; authorship is collective and attribution to the Buddha traditional. Scholarship distinguishes early strata from later additions by comparing the Pali canon with its Chinese, Sanskrit and Tibetan parallels.
