Buda de pie, arte de Gandhara
bySiddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

Forty-two brief maxims on renunciation, desire, patience and meditation, in a style close to the Chinese classics. Its founding legend—Emperor Ming's dream of a golden man—is the traditional account of Buddhism's arrival in China, and the text was widely circulated in Chan and Zen.

Authorship note

A Chinese florilegium of sayings attributed to the Buddha, drawn from various texts. Tradition makes it the first sutra translated into Chinese (c. 67 CE, under Emperor Ming of the Han); scholarship regards it as a compilation of the second to third centuries, retouched in later periods.
