The Gospel of Thomas
ⲡⲉⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲟⲛ ⲡⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲑⲱⲙⲁⲥ

The most important of the apocryphal gospels. With no narrative, miracles or passion, it presents Jesus as a teacher of wisdom whose "secret sayings" give life to whoever finds their interpretation. Nearly half its sayings have parallels in the Synoptics (the mustard seed, the sower, the lamp under the bushel); others are its own and mystical in tone: the kingdom "is inside you and outside you", "is spread out upon the earth and people do not see it". Its discovery revived the debate on the Q source and the diversity of early Christianity.
Authorship note
A collection of 114 sayings introduced by the formula "Jesus said", attributed in its incipit to "Didymos Judas Thomas". It survives complete in Coptic in Nag Hammadi Codex II (c. 350) and in Greek fragments from Oxyrhynchus (P. Oxy. 1, 654 and 655, c. 200). Its date is debated: some place it in the mid-first century, with sayings independent of the Synoptics; others in the second century and dependent on them. It is the work neither of Jesus nor of the apostle Thomas.
