byJesus of Nazareth

An expanded account of Jesus's trial before Pilate, with witnesses testifying on his behalf, followed by the resurrection and Christ's descent into hell, narrated by two men raised from the dead. It was one of the most widely read apocrypha of the Middle Ages and the main source of the image of Christ freeing the righteous from Hades.

Authorship note

Attributed to Nicodemus. It combines Acts of Pilate, whose Greek form is dated to around the fourth century, and a Descent of Christ into Hell added later; the title Gospel of Nicodemus is medieval and Latin.
