Epistolae et instructiones

Retrato de Ignacio de Loyola
byIgnatius of Loyola

Most of it is administrative correspondence: postings, colleges, finances, relations with princes and bishops. Among it are first-rate pieces of spiritual direction —the letters to Teresa Rejadell (1536) on discernment, to the students of Coimbra on perfection (1547), to the Jesuits of Portugal on obedience (1553)— and a remarkable correspondence with women of every condition, from Isabel Roser to Joanna of Austria. It shows the mystic turned meticulous organiser.

Authorship note

Some 6,800 letters and instructions survive, written between 1524 and 1556 in Spanish, Italian and Latin. Many were drafted by his secretaries —above all Polanco from 1547— 'on his commission'; those in his own hand or personally dictated are a minority. Critical edition: Monumenta Ignatiana, Epistolae et instructiones, 12 vols., Madrid, 1903–1911.
