Mahāparinibbāna Sutta

It narrates the Buddha's last journey from Rajagaha to Kusinara: the advice to the Vajji state, the exhortation to be "an island and refuge unto oneself", the relinquishing of the life force, Cunda's meal, the ordination of Subhadda, the refusal to name a successor and the last words, followed by cremation and the division of relics. It is the source of the Buddha's last words and of the cult of relics and pilgrimage.

Authorship note
Discourse 16 of the Digha Nikaya, the longest in the canon. It is a narrative composition by the community gathering teachings attributed to the Buddha in his last months; it has parallels in Sanskrit (ed. Waldschmidt), in the Chinese Dirgha Agama and in the Mulasarvastivada Vinaya.
