Jātaka

Five hundred and forty-seven stories of the Bodhisatta's previous existences as animal, king, merchant or ascetic, each with a frame in the present, the tale of the past and a final identification of the characters. It is the largest collection of fables of Indian antiquity and the main source of Buddhist iconography at Sanchi, Bharhut and Ajanta.

Authorship note
A collection of the Pali canon: only the verses are canonical; the prose narratives come from the Jatakatthavannana commentary (fifth century CE). Tradition presents each story as told by the Buddha about one of his former lives; much of the material is adapted Indian folklore.
