Library Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

Later compilation
Anguttara Nikaya (The Numerical Discourses)
Aṅguttara Nikāya

Several thousand discourses arranged numerically, from groups of one item to groups of eleven, a mnemonic device typical of oral transmission. It is rich in practical teachings for lay people, among them the discourse to the Kalamas (AN 3.65) on how to examine doctrines, and the Buddha's recollection of his comfortable youth (AN 3.38).

Authorship note
The Buddha wrote nothing. The discourses were transmitted orally for centuries by specialised reciters and committed to writing in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; authorship is collective and attribution to the Buddha traditional. Scholarship distinguishes early strata from later additions by comparing the Pali canon with its Chinese, Sanskrit and Tibetan parallels.
