Upadesa Saram (The Essence of Instruction)

உபதேச உந்தியார் / उपदेशसारम्

Retrato de Ramana Maharshi por G. G. Welling (1948)
byRamana Maharshi

Thirty verses that move in ascending order through the spiritual paths: ritual action without attachment, worship, repetition of the name, meditation, breath control and, at the summit, enquiry into the source of the mind. It does not disqualify the earlier paths but shows that all lead to the stillness of the heart. It is the text recited daily at Sri Ramanasramam.

Authorship note

Written by Ramana in Tamil (Upadesa Undiyar) at the request of the poet Muruganar, who was composing a poem on Shiva and asked him for the verses of instruction; Ramana himself translated it into Sanskrit (Upadesa Saram), Telugu and Malayalam.
