Who Am I? (Nan Yar?)

நான் யார்?

Retrato de Ramana Maharshi por G. G. Welling (1948)
byRamana Maharshi

Ramana's most widely read text and the best gateway to his teaching. In a few pages it proposes that happiness is the nature of the Self, that the mind is nothing but a bundle of thoughts held together by the 'I'-thought, and that the direct path consists in turning attention to the source of that thought by asking 'Who am I?'. It distinguishes enquiry from mere suppression of thoughts, presents surrender as an equivalent path and states that the real Self is not attained: it is revealed when identification with body and mind ceases.

Authorship note

Answers Ramana gave in writing, around 1901–1902, to Sivaprakasam Pillai's questions, when he was still not speaking. Pillai published them in 1923; according to Osborne the answers were later expanded and arranged in book form, the prose version now in circulation.
